About Welch & Quest

Our History

In 1914, Norman A. Welch and Walter J. Quest started a Toronto printing company in the basement of a local bakery on Roncesvalles Avenue. In the 1970s the company moved to Mississauga, reducing overhead so competitive pricing could be maintained.

In 1979, Terry Whelpton purchased the company. He transformed Welch & Quest from a small Toronto printing company with a pair of single-colour presses to a full-service printing company with full-colour presses, in-house design and computerized mail management services. Keeping on top of technology advances, we converted to direct-to-plate technology and recently purchased a state-of-the-art digital production press for speedy turnarounds on short runs. Much has changed since that modest start almost a century ago, but our commitment to provide the highest standard of commercial printing for a reasonable price remains the same. As our capabilities continue to expand, we will maintain the personal service for which we are known. Our customers and long-serving employees value the personal touch we bring to every print project.

Terry Whelpton, Owner

Terry Whelpton, Welch & QuestTerry grew up in publishing. His father, E.W. Whelpton published the Who’s Who in Canada directory in the ’60s and ’70s. Terry spent his summers working for his dad and developed a love for ink and paper. Pursuing this passion, he earned a diploma in Graphic Arts from the Ryerson Institute of Technology (now Ryerson University) and went on to earn a B.Sc. degree at the Rochester Institute of Technology – the leader in graphic arts at the time. While editing and publishing Canada’s national tennis magazine, and Ski Canada magazine Terry dealt with printers all over Ontario, Western Canada and United States. Thanks to his technical background he could quickly distinguish good printers from bad, and realized what a valuable thing it is to find a great printer. Eight years later he sold his publications to McLean Hunter. Still harbouring a love of print, Terry bought Welch & Quest from the original family line in February 1979.

Steve Whelpton, President

Steve Whelpton, Welch & QuestSteve started collating at his dad’s Toronto printing company as a kid during school holidays, and started his full time sales role in 2004. He has a degree in Urban Planning from Concordia University, which he is contentedly not using today. He loves working in print and the feel of a finished piece in his hands. He takes much satisfaction in moving a project along and watching it develop from initial concept stages to a beautiful finished product. Steve brings a personal touch to Welch & Quest – he’ll often hand-deliver samples or proofs – and always goes out of his way to make sure clients are happy.
